Natural-looking, mercury-free fillings that blend right in.
White (tooth-coloured) fillings are one of the most common cosmetic dental treatments, and many patients ask us whether they should choose them over traditional metal fillings.
Metal amalgam fillings are used less often today. They remain the only option available on the NHS for back teeth, but some people dislike their appearance, and others have concerns about amalgam - concerns that most dental professionals do not share. Amalgam fillings can last for many years, but over time the tooth around them may develop small cracks or become discoloured. Once this happens, whitening or replacing the filling will not restore the tooth's original colour. For these reasons, we now place fewer metal fillings than in the past.
Small to medium metal fillings can usually be replaced in a single visit with a tooth-coloured material at a relatively low cost. Larger fillings may need an inlay or onlay - a custom restoration made in a dental laboratory and bonded into the tooth. These restorations are stronger but more expensive and require two appointments.
Many parents prefer not to have amalgam placed in their children's teeth. Although NHS treatment for children is free, white fillings on back teeth are not covered. Parents who want tooth-coloured fillings for their child can choose to have this treatment privately.
We numb the tooth with local anaesthetic if needed, so you stay comfortable.
Any decay or the old filling is gently removed and the area cleaned.
Tooth-coloured composite is placed in layers and set with a curing light.
We shape it, check your bite and polish for a natural finish - usually one visit.
Modern composites are strong and bond directly to the tooth. For very large cavities we may suggest an inlay or onlay for extra durability.
Yes - we shade-match the material so it blends in and is virtually invisible.
Small to medium amalgam fillings can usually be swapped for white ones in a single visit.
